The world's most famous jewel - the Hope diamond - is to be given a makeover by Harry Winston to honour the 50th anniversary of its donation to the Smithsonian Institute. In 1958, the diamond was given to the Smithsonian as a "gift to the American people" by Harry Winston himself and now the American public is being invited to vote of a new design for the 45.52 carat blue diamond. The three designs, which symbolise hope in America, can be voted for at www.smithsonianchannel.com from August 19 to September 7 2009. The final setting will then be unveiled in Washington later this year before it is returned to its original setting at the end of 2011.
